Camelot’s Camden Accelerated students learn the lessons of Manhood at Boyz to Men Program
(Camden, NJ – April 25, 2012)
“You need a dream and you need a vision if you want to become man.” That’s the message that William Cobb of the Urban Angel Foundation delivered to begin the 2012 Boyz to Men program at Camelot’s Camden Accelerated High School. Mr. Cobb went around the room challenging the young men to state their dreams and how they planned to achieve them.
He was followed by 14 other inspiration and knowledgeable leaders who shared experiences of how to stay out of trouble, stay focused on goals and become successful.
Camelot is in its first year in Camden, operating two transitional programs for students with discipline problems and an accelerated program for students who have either dropped out or are at risk of dropping out.
Just as is the case in Philadelphia, Lancaster, PA and elsewhere, these schools are doing a remarkable job of helping these second chance students turn their lives around.
The Boyz to Men program was the creation of Camelot Camden’s Director of Student Services, Hendy Demby. “This kind of program is invaluable for our students. They get to hear the voices of successful, experienced adults, many of whom have been through rough roads in their lives as well,” Demby said.
Music producer Flemuel Brown addressed fear, which he said stops many of us from achieving our dreams. He urged the students to overcome their fears of failure. Add action to your vision,” he said, “and you can change the world.”
Camelot had presented this program in Philadelphia the last two years. This was the first time for Camden. A similar event for female students is planned.
