Camelot Chester hosts first Golf Outing, Swing for Scholarships
A former star athlete at Springfield High School, Camelot Chester Executive Director Jamar Brown is heading to his hometown for a new kind of sporting event – a golf outing to raise scholarship funds for Delaware County students.
On March 24th, Camelot Chester is hosting Swing for Scholarships, the school’s first-ever golf tournament to benefit students pursuing higher education. The event, to be held at Springfield Country Club near Chester, already has more than 50 participants and several sponsors lined up.
“The objective is to award two seniors that have demonstrated a high level of integrity, strong academic efforts, and strong leadership skills with scholarship money towards their post-secondary studies,” Brown explained.
In the 2014-2015 school year, 92% of Camelot students graduated and 99% of graduates from Camelot’s accelerated schools across the country were accepted into post-secondary programs. With an increasing number of Camelot students being eligible for higher education, Brown wanted to provide more help for students in this endeavor. This year, Brown hopes to raise $5,000 in the first golf outing.
“I came up with the idea for this event because I felt that as a company we need to give back to the students that drive the Camelot story and continue to make us successful on a local and national level,” Brown said. “Chester is a poor city, and a lot of these students don’t have the same opportunities that so many people have growing up. I want to show that that people do care for them, and motivate them to keep working hard.”
Brown, who served as captain of the Springfield High football team and broke the Delaware County rushing record, went on to play football at Shippensburg University. He said that many of the traits he learned as a team captain have shaped the way he leads at Camelot and what he works to project to Camelot students.
“When you’re the captain of a team, you have to lead by example,” Brown said. “You have to stay motivated, and you have to motivate others around you.”
