Camelot vocational coordinator Amy Martins gave a presentation on structured teaching.

Autism specialists from Camelot’s therapeutic day schools in Illinois joined together at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais for a day of conversation and self-examination about the work Camelot is doing for children with autism and the direction the team wants to move.

In particular, Jon Klavohn, principal of Camelot of Bourbonnais, showcased his program. Jon is a graduate of ONU.

“We asked why we are doing things the way we are and ensuring that everything we are doing is backed by evidence to support it,” said Camelot VP for therapeutic day schools Theresa Mortl Smith.

Michael Gurley, Principal of Camelot Naperville Campus and Head of Clinical Services of Therapeutic Day Schools makes a point.

Professors from Michigan State University and other distinguished guests from Michigan also attended the sessions to observe how Camelot maximizes the potential of every student and how teachers and staff implement these techniques in a TDS setting – and how evidence-based therapies are embedded into the school day.

“I am very proud of my team. Their genuine compassion and interest in working with children with autism resonated through the entire day. The team that we have built over the past several years is just a tremendous group of people wanting to do the best they can for children with special needs,” Mortl Smith said.

Mortl Smith also recognized Olivet Nazarene University officials for their generosity in hosting the event and allowing Camelot to use the school’s facilities.
