Aspira Excel Academy, Camelot’s North Philadelphia accelerated high school, celebrated its first annual pinning ceremony with a special presentation by Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Rogers-Cromartie, who overcame the loss of a kidney at age 5 to become a star in the National Football League, bestowed the Inspiration Award to student Donta Holdsclaw.

“We decided to present our seniors with senior pins to remind them that they are working toward graduation in June. Our students have fought back and taken full advantage of the second chance they have been afforded at Aspira Excel Academy. The pins are meant as a reminder that they own their education and it’s up to them to complete their senior year,” said Aspira Excel Academy Executive Director Sadiqa Lucas. “The Inspiration Award is earned by a student who helps and motivates his peers.”

Seniors at the event recited the Senior Oath together. It says in part, “We the Class of 2013…will empower each other to make good decisions, and also help educate those around us.”

“We thank Aspira of Pennsylvania and Olney Charter High School for their ongoing support and partnership,” said Camelot VP of Alternative Education Milton Alexander. “That support has led to one outcome for our students, success.”

Camelot operates Aspira Excel Academy for over-aged, under-credited students on behalf of Aspira of Pennsylvania. Camelot’s accelerated model has consistently produced graduation rates of 90% and higher at its other two Excel Academies in Philadelphia. School officials believe they can reach that same level at Aspira Excel, which is now in its second year of operation.
