Students from Northwest Center for Autism Win Special Olympics Gold
Some athletes from Camelot’s Northwest Center for Autism in DeKalb, Il, are headed for the state competition of the Special Olympics February 4-6 after striking gold at the regional games at Starved Rock in Ottawa, IL.
Seven athletes from NWCA participated in the snow-shoeing event. The team earned 8 gold medals, 5 silver and 1 bronze medal, and 5 of the 7 athletes qualified for state round.
Special Olympics is for children 8 years old and above with intellectual disabilities, including students on the Autism Spectrum. At NWCA, physical education teacher Brock Nichols heads up the training for Special Olympics, and each student that participates has a coach who is also a staff member at NWCA.
What an awesome accomplishment for the NWCA students!
