Transitional School student excelling at math – preparing to return to his home high school
(Lancaster – January 11, 2012)
Denis Krasnic came to Camelot’s Buehrle transitional high school in December 2011 to get help with some issues that were holding back his education.
With the support of Buehrle staff and his family, Denis has excelled in his studies, particularly in math, and is preparing to return to McCaskey East High School in February.
In a recent on-line test through a program called “Think Through Math,” Denis ranked third among the hundreds of Pennsylvania students taking the test that day with a score of 18,000 points.
“We are all very proud of Denis. As a soccer player he has a competitive spirit, and as he continued to improve his math skills he wanted very much to be ranked number one in the state. He made it all the way up to third, which is a fantastic accomplishment,” said Buehrle Executive Director Angel Colon. “Denis is totally prepared to return to McCaskey East and succeed there and beyond.”
Think Through Math is a self-paced course that supplements classroom learning. In the program, the students work through lessons to review and strengthen their math skills. Each lesson includes a pre-quiz, guided learning, practice, and post-tests.
As students move through the lessons they are able to monitor their progress and earn points to buy prizes.
“We use it as a lab and measuring tool and Denis has measured up with the best in the state,” Colon said. “
Buehrle is an alternative school serving up to 135 students at any point in the school year.
Camelot also operates Phoenix Academy, an accelerated school for students in the Lancaster School District who have fallen behind and need to catch up to grade level.
